Ok here we go with one of the most magnificent albums of all time. PARADISE LOST<\/a> broke onto the scene with a very respectable but in many ways un-remarkable first album. (See our review here<\/a>)<\/i> and gained a reasonable following. Their next venture into the studio produced this gem. One of the finest metal albums to ever grace the underground scene and an album that as a teenager endeared me with them forever. <\/p>\n\n

The album opens up with with a more refined guitar tone than their previous release. We’re only seconds into the album when guitar player Gregor MacKintosh unleashes some of the simplest yet most melodic and hardest hitting guitar melodies ever. At this moment, and rest assured I still remember my initial listen to this album when it came out, I knew these guys found their groove. This, for me was a magical moment.<\/p>\n\n

The vocals are filthy but very understandable. You don’t need to follow along with the lyric sheet in hand as Nick Holmes’ vocals are very well enunciated, something as a vocalist myself, I really appreciate. The addition of keyboards really brings out the melodies created in this. This is minimilist death metal. It’s slow, it’s morbid and has a very good sense of melody. Some sentences that really shouldn’t go together but with this band it works so well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The album opens up with title track “Gothic” and from the outset you know you’re in for something special. The female vocals give it an etherial edge and a huge boost in the variety factor that many bands at the time were missing. “Dead Emotion” up next, and the brilliance continues. <\/p>\n\n\n

“Shattered” is a great track, I love those artifical harmonics peppered through the track and the simple melodies of “Rapture” just cut right through you. We’re now four songs into this album and this is already a God-Teir release. <\/p>\n\n

At this point its important to say Paradise didn’t put out a good album, they put out an album that will FOREVER be a part of my journey through life as a metalhed. I’m re listening to this now and it literally brings a tear to my eyes.<\/p>\n\n

Next up is what I would have to say is the BEST song on on this album. The guitar harmonies are perfect. “Eternal” is the game changer for these guys. This is pure magic. It combines the best parts of death metal with doom and and gives it an orchestral arrangement with the most divine female vocals you could put on this. I knew about Paradise Lost before this album but when I heard this for the first time on the local heavy metal radio station (thank you 2xx)<\/i> i was simply blown away and literally went to the record store the next day to buy this masterpeice.<\/p>\n\n

Holy, crap I’ve just realised I’ve racked up almost 500 words on this album and we’ve only just gotten into the second half of the album! I guess when you’re enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about it hahah!<\/p>\n\n

Side two with “Angel tears” just keeps it going in fine form while “Silent” has some magnificent melodies. While reading back on this review it’s pretty obvious what I really think about this album and there’s pretty much no point going on any more. It’s just fuckin’ brilliant. There’s no other way to describe this release. <\/p>\n\n

The only thing I can do at this point is emplore you to either listen to it nice and loud on youtube or better yet fork out some cash and get a physical copy of this. This is a heavy metal album for ages and i really can’t imagine anyone not liking this one. <\/p>\n\n
