In the gritty streets of Belo Horizonte, Brazil<\/strong>, during the mid-1980s\u2014a time of political transition and economic hardship\u2014a powerful musical movement was brewing. It was here, in 1984, that Sepultura<\/strong> was formed by teenage brothers Max Cavalera<\/strong> and Igor Cavalera<\/strong>. What began as a raw expression of rebellion would evolve into one of the most iconic and influential metal bands in history.<\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n

The Early Days of Sepultura<\/h2>\n

Max (vocals\/guitar) and Igor (drums) were inspired by bands like Metallica<\/em>, Slayer<\/em>, Venom<\/em>, and Celtic Frost<\/em>. Their musical journey began with limited resources, homemade instruments, and a fierce DIY spirit that reflected the challenges of being metal musicians in 1980s Brazil.<\/p>\n

The name Sepultura<\/strong>, meaning “grave” in Portuguese, was inspired by the Mot\u00f6rhead song \u201cDancing on Your Grave.\u201d With bassist Paulo Jr.<\/strong> and guitarist Jairo Guedz<\/strong>, the band quickly made waves in the local underground scene.<\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n

First Releases: Bestial Devastation<\/em> and Morbid Visions<\/em><\/h2>\n

Sepultura\u2019s recording career began in 1985 with the release of the EP Bestial Devastation<\/em><\/strong>, a split with Overdose under Cogumelo Records. A year later, their debut album Morbid Visions<\/em><\/strong> introduced the world to their raw black\/death metal sound. The album featured the underground hit \u201cTroops of Doom<\/em>.\u201d The band managed to move a few copies of their first EP and even managed to get a slot on the first “Rock in Rio” fest in 1985 which bands like Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Queen played, which would have been a massive shot in the arm for such a young band.<\/p>\n\n

Despite the rough production and limited English skills, Sepultura\u2019s energy and ferocity captured the attention of metal fans worldwide. Shortly after, Jairo Guedz left the band, paving the way for the entry of guitarist Andreas Kisser, a key figure in the band\u2019s evolution.<\/p>\n\n

The Rise of a New Sound: Schizophrenia and Global Attention<\/h2>\n

With Andreas Kisser on board, Sepultura\u2019s sound matured dramatically. Their 1987 album Schizophrenia blended thrash, death metal, and progressive elements. Songs like \u201cEscape to the Void\u201d showcased advanced songwriting and technical skill.<\/p>\n\n\n
