Massacre’s from beyond is a great album, released in 1991 it is basically everyone from Death’s Leprosy album minus Chuck Schuldiner and replaced by Cam Lee on vocals. Maybe you’d call it a striped back single guitar version of Death. It’s kind of a shame this didn’t come out earlier as these guys are all pioneers of death metal but by the time 1991 had come around the scene had more or less established its main players.
The album opens up with the “Dawn of Eternity” and from the start it is a non stop exercise pummelling. Massacre aren’t the fastest or the most technical but they do what they do very well and there’s a sense of overbearing heaviness that a lot of other bands just can’t get.
This is Florida death metal to the core with a mixture of Death and Obituary present but far groovier than those bands were doing at the time. I have to say I love Cam Lee’s vocals they are very powerful and deep but have that understandable quality about them (Well, understandable as far as death metal goes)
Over all this is a quality release, and instantly likeable. I understand that lyrically this album is based on the HP Lovecraft tale “From Beyond” which makes sense. I’ll have to go back and give this another listen lyrcially to confirm but that earns a lot of cred points in my book!
Overall this is a very enjoyable album and a great snap shot of the old school death metal scene. Defs one to be recommended for fans of Death Metal.
