This is an interesting one to review because it fits in both metal and punk territories. Suicidal Tendencies first album comes straight out of 1983 not far behind Metallica’s “Kill em all”, but with a far different take on the genre. Suicidal write short punchy songs, with a lot of political songs and and stuff that focuses in on the crazy stuff going on (presumably) in singer Mike Muir’s head.
For this album Suicidal fit into a similar category to say Motorhead. Where as Motorhead played rock n roll, they played it so distorted and heavy that it basically became metal. Suicidal at this point were playing punk music so fast and distorted it also became “metal”. Whilst al lot of the riffage in this album is punk its played more precisely (and with guitar solos) than punk at the time. The band also had a unique image preferring not to look metal but more like LA gang members than rockers.
Vocalist Mike Muir puts a LOT of energy into his performance and whilst his vocal rants may come across as unhinged, he actually makes a lot of sense. I have a huge respect for Mike Muir and he definitely helped shape my view on things as a teenager. My Fave song would have to be “Institutionalized” but really they’re all pretty cool. I sometimes wonder if the song “I saw your Mommy” was just an attempt to annoy the powers that be as its really a pretty immature song.
Anyway whilst I do like this album, it was nothing compared to what the band would evolve into shortly afterwards. Really the only song that even hinted how this band would evolve from there would be “I want more”. But either way Suicidal Tendencies were off to a great start gaining a staunch following in their home turf of Venice Beach, California and through the underground network of skaters and punks everywhere!
