Manowar

Introduction

Manowar is one of the most iconic bands in heavy metal history. Also one of the most polarising bands in History. I’ve never met anyone that says “Yeah, they’re OK”. Its always “I love them!” or “I f–kin’ hate them!” Known for their epic themes, powerful sound, dedication to the genre and some of the most cringe worthy band photos I’ve ever seen, Manowar built a cult following from their earliest days. They were also one of the first bands to embrace Heavy Metal as a lifestyle Their imagery (especially in the early days with the loin cloths and barbarian type look) really put a lot of potential fans off the band but others who did give the band a chance really dove in head first and loved it. Either way, the band certainly made a name and created an image for themselves which still stands strong for them to this very day.

The Formation of Manowar

Manowar was formed in 1980 in Auburn, New York, by bassist Joey DeMaio and guitarist Ross “The Boss” Friedman. The two musicians met while on tour—DeMaio was working as a pyrotechnic for Black Sabbath, and Friedman was a member of the band Shakin’ Street. Sharing a passion for intense, powerful heavy metal, they decided to form their own band with the goal of delivering the most “true” metal experience. As a fan of the band myself I have to say they’ve certainly achieved this, not only in their music but the over the top live shows the band puts on. At various points in their career Manowar have been credited as being the “Loudest band in the world” putting on shows with absolutely ridiculous volume levels.

Manowar’s Unique Sound and Style

From the beginning, Manowar set themselves apart from other metal bands with their over-the-top imagery, lyrics inspired by mythology and battle, and their famous slogan: “Death to false metal!” exemplified by the bands call to arms anthem, “Metal Warriors”.

Everything the band does is over the top and taken to its natural extremity. One thing that sets Manowar apart is the depth of musicianship in the band. Bass player Joey DeMaio plays an unconventional “Piccolo” bass with a more “punchy” bass tone allowing the bass to become a featured instrument in the band sound, some of the tightest drumming to ever have been committed to tape (especially considering what else was around in 1982) and Eric Addams unmatched vocal range soaring above band majestically.

The Debut Album: Battle Hymns (1982)

In 1982, Manowar released their debut album, Battle Hymns. The album introduced their signature sound and featured tracks like “Manowar”, “Death Tone”, and the epic “Battle Hymn”. The legendary actor Orson Welles provided narration on the track “Dark Avenger”, adding a cinematic touch to their storytelling.

The album was released through Liberty Records, but Manowar soon parted ways with the label, as they felt the company did not fully support their artistic vision.

Breaking Through: Into Glory Ride (1983)

Manowar’s second album, Into Glory Ride, was released in 1983 and marked a shift towards an even more epic and dramatic sound. Songs like “Gates of Valhalla” and “Secret of Steel” showcased their deep connection to fantasy and warrior themes. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the album solidified their growing fan base in the underground metal scene.

Growing Fanbase and Metal Rebellion

Throughout the early ’80s, Manowar positioned themselves as a band that refused to compromise. They became famous for their rebellious stance against mainstream music and record labels, even signing their record deal in blood to show their dedication to true heavy metal.

They also set a Guinness World Record for the loudest concert, proving that their dedication to the power of sound was unmatched.

The Road to Success

By the mid-’80s, Manowar had begun to carve out a dedicated following, particularly in Europe, where heavy metal was experiencing a major boom. Their next albums, such as Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer, continued to build their reputation as one of the most intense and uncompromising metal bands in the world.

The Legacy of Manowar’s Early Years

Manowar’s early years were defined by their dedication to heavy metal, their refusal to conform to mainstream expectations, and their ability to create powerful, battle-hardened anthems. These formative years set the foundation for a career that has lasted for decades, influencing countless metal bands around the world.
