Blasphemy are a band that I had heard in the early 1990’s but never really given the time of day. I found their sound a bit too extreme and quite frankly it lacked the flair of other bands doing the rounds at the time. This isn’t necessarliy a comment on the band but there was a lot of good stuff going round at the time and I was teenager trying to buy whatever music that I could afford and in the hey day of death metal this quite frankly didn’t rank for me.
It boggles my mind that a band this heavy and intense could have formed in 1984. I’m not sure what the band actually did between 1984 and the release of their demo in 1989 and then this in 1990 but it must have been festeringly hateful to fuel this release. This is not like any death metal release before it. For this level of intensity you had early grindcore, and bathory and of course Australian nutbags Sadistik Exekution. I wonder whether these guys had heard Sadistik Exekution’s early demos and decided to replicate (or try to beat that level of extremity) or whether it was a natural progression from bands like Possessed. Either way the band produced something new. WAR METAL.
I don’t think there’s any point reviewing any individual songs here, the album is a wall of assualting noise, and while I didn’t like these guys in the 90’s I have t say wha they did was revolutionary and far beyond any of the death metal bands at the time in terms of extremity. This doesn’t mean they are BETTER, it means they were more extreme.
Now I’m older I can look back at this and appreciate it for what it was. This was the extremity of metal and these guys pushed it right to the edge. For that they deserve some credit.
