After DISMEMBERS rough but instantly addictive demo it was time to go back into the studio to release a proper full length. Instantly noticeable they’ve cleaned up the sound a little (well, not the sound so much as the recording quality) and produced this. Like an Ever Flowing Stream is one of the most legitimately crushing debut’s out of this European scene dating back to 1991.
I remember this coming out at the time and while it did draw comparisons to being an “Entombed clone” band I think it was important there was at least a couple of bands out of Sweden doing this. Entombed and Dismember have very similar guitar tones for sure but between these two bands legendary debut’s and a few bands that further re-inforced the sound we now have that infamous “Swedish death metal guitar tone”. I’m not sure what Entombed were using at the time but I know Entombed were using a 40w marshall combo and the HM2 boss distortion pedal. This sounds the same. to me.
Whilst sounding similar to Entombed, Dismember put forward a more intimidating image with the band covered in blood and song titles like “Soon to be Dead” “Bleed for Me” and “Skin Her Alive”. Whist a bit of shock value goes a long way for a new band these songs definitely stand on their own merits. This is a legendary slab of Swedish Death Metal, and every song on here slays. The riffs are fantastic and the sound perfectly captures what was going on with the scene at the time.
It’s hard to pick a favourite song as with many death metal bands, you either like it all or you don’t and this is one of those. I love it. One song I have to say really stands out for melody is the song “Dismembered”. While it doesn’t have a lot of vocals it shows the band can really play and have. a great command of melody, especially in the guitar solo department.
Over all this is another all time great death metal release and one every fan of the genre should check out. I sincerely hope you do!
