Sadistik Exekution The Magus

This release is something special, and being Australian myself, SADISTIK EXEKUTION The Magus holds a special place in my heart. The history behind this band is mythological and something I’ll cover in more detail when I get around to doing their band profile but this album was one of the most highly anticipated extreme metal releases of all time before it came out (Well in the underground anyway) as the band had been trading tapes with most of the Norwegian black metal scene who’d not only liked the tape but taken the band on board as an influence. If you look at the early Black Metal albums from Norway / Sweden you see a lot of that scene wearing the early “Sadisitik Exekution” shirts.

Anyway enough about the band, this history of the band is hard to understand but I believe the songs were first released in 1986 as demo’s then recorded again properly in 1998 to come out a while later in 1991. The songs at the time were beyond extreme, this is some of the fastest and most extreme music ever committed to tape. The band play with skill reminiscent of Possessed but with the song writing sensibilities of say Iron Maiden.

The album opens up with a really creepy intro, as many extreme metal albums do, to go into some of the most extreme music ever played. This is as fast or faster than Slayer’s Reign in Blood but deeper sounding with singer Rok howling and roaring like a demented mad man over the top of things, and some rather fast drumming. This is an underground gem that maybe not a lot of black or death metal fans know about but really something you should hear and experience. Bear in mind at the time this came out there was really nothing like and the band was miles ahead of say Mayhem or really any of the Scandanavian scene. I cant think of much that really compares to this in terms of extremity or musical skill in the death metal scene either. I think the songs are much more accessible than even say Possessed or any of the up and coming death metal or grind at the time. It’s actually a shame the band didn’t get the recognition they deserved they could have been huge.

Anyway My favourite songs are “The Magus”, “Agonizing the Dead” and “Sadistikly Exekuted” all of which show case song writing and extremity far beyond anything at the time.
