I was in two minds about whether to review an EP, but since Sodom Expurse of Sodomy is all unique material only really available on this EP, I was like “Yeah gotta review that one”. Also this EP is very important in the way that this for me really marks the transformation of Sodom’s sound from raw underground black metal into the thrash titans they would later become. Don’t get me wrong I love the first two albums (both reviewed here) but this is a huge step forward in terms of song writing and musical ability.
The EP opens with the song “Sodomy and Lust” and you can instantly hear the difference. The Riffage is sooo much more solid and coherent. The tones the band are using are far beyond what they’d ever used before, I guess this is just the result of a little more money in the bank to spend on toys and better instruments. I’m going to call this the start of the second era of Sodom.
Next up is “the Conqueror” which I think would have one of the fastest guitar intro’s ever recorded…. and bear in mind I just saw Possessed play couple of weeks ago. I can’t believe the progression this band have made within a few months of their last release, this is now major league world champion contender thrash metal.
The third and last track on this slab is “My Atonement” which starts off with a well creepy intro and the first time Sodom have picked up an acoustic guitar. Again the band have come leaps and bounds by now, and this one is actually a really haunting track, right before it descends into a brutal pummelling with the new found double kick stability and rhythm guitar tightness.
