Paradise Lost Paradise Lost

PARADISE LOST – Paradise Lost is the first album from this excellent British band. Paradise Lost have changed a lot over the years so this will be an interesting journey listening to their stuff over the years. I’m not going to say this album is generic death metal, but it was the closest the band got to what I’d call “standard issue” death metal. One thing I really like about the band is the variation they put into their records.

Paradise Lost are band that I respect and this their first album is pretty decently performed, the best way to describe this is as a slower version of death metal with a little more melody than the other death and grind bands that were coming out of England at the same time. Nick Holmes’ voice on this is really cool, he has a great texture and feel to it. The guitar work, as I said before is as close to standard death metal as the band really ever got, but you can see the beginnings of the melodic flavours that the band would soon develop. There’s a very deep tone to the guitars that other bands (Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Napalm Death) at the time didn’t have.

Over all this is pretty quality Death Metal, but really a shadow of the greatness that the band would acheive in the next few albums they put out. It’s also a very interesting look at how they started.
